Americans Helping Americans Abroad

The AARO 2018 Midterm Election Project Needs Your Help Connecting to the Candidates

The 2018 Midterm Elections are fast approaching, and candidates need to know about issues which are important to Americans living abroad. To raise awareness of these issues, AARO has organized the 2018 Midterm Election Project.

Following their state primaries, AARO volunteers contacted all the House and Senate candidates in nine states asking them to answer three questions on issues important to Americans overseas: taxation, government services, and banking. Their answers, as well as personal messages from the candidates, are being published on the AARO website as they are received.

Our volunteers have done a great job but now we need your help.

If you are from California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas or Washington, here’s what you can do to make this project a success in just three easy steps.

1. Find Your Candidates

Go to the Ballotpedia, United States Congress Elections, 2018 webpage and click on your state in the sidebar U.S. Senate Elections by State or U.S. House Elections by State on the right side of the page.

For the House elections, scroll down the page to find your district and note the General Election candidates who are running.

2. See Who Responded and Who Didn't

Go to the 2018 Midterm Election Project page on the AARO website, click on your state in the right-hand sidebar, and see if candidates for your district (House) and state (Senate) have replied.

3. Take Action

Responded to AARO: If a candidate from your district or state responded, go to their campaign website and thank them for participating. If you wish, ask them questions about their responses or about any other topics that are important to you. You can reach each candidate using the link to their website at the bottom of their submission on the AARO website.

Did Not Respond to AARO: If any candidates for your district or state have not replied, send them a note asking them to respond to the message from the Association of Americans Resident Overseas (AARO).

To contact your Senate candidates, return to the Ballotpedia, United States Congress Elections, 2018 webpage and click on your state in the U.S. Senate Elections by State sidebar.

To contact your House candidates, return to the Ballotpedia, United States Congress Elections, 2018 webpage, select your state in the U.S. House Elections by State sidebar, and scroll down to find your district. Click on the candidate's name.

This will open Ballotpedia’s information page for the candidate which lists contact options for him/her on the right-hand sidebar.

Or you can simply run a search with your web browser (Google, Firefox, Bing...) using the phrase “[candidate name] for congress” to find their website.

Thank you for taking a few minutes to remind our candidates that they have constituents who live overseas and that we have issues which are vitally important to us.
