Americans Helping Americans Abroad

Question 1: Taxation

Would you commit to working with Americans residing abroad to reform the current citizenship-based US tax system?

Yes. Enactment of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act has helped streamline our burdensome tax code and spur economic innovation. However, there is still more work to be done to continue improving our tax code. As we consider additional changes to our tax code, I remain committed to helping all Americans—including those who live abroad. I will work to ensure we have a fair taxation system, those living abroad having adequate banking services, and everyone has access to the resources needed to comply with the tax law.

Question 2: Services

Will you support on-line access to government agencies and adequate funding for consular functions upon which Americans abroad rely?

Yes, I support ensuring Americans living abroad have convenient access to assistance with navigating federal programs such as Social Security and Medicare. I also support making sure U.S. citizens facing legal issues abroad are assured of consular access in accordance with the rights they are granted under the Vienna Convention.

Know Your Customer and Enhanced Due Diligence rules for US banks were initially intended to prevent banks from being used for money-laundering and other illegal activities. They have, however, had consequences for Americans living outside the US who wish to hold accounts in the United States. One such consequence is that American banks are closing accounts and refusing service to Americans living outside the US.

Question 3: Banking

Would you support an enforceable right for all US citizens to a US bank account so they can retain their US savings and retirement accounts and make and receive payments in the United States?

Yes, I support easing burdensome and unnecessary reporting requirements on financial institutions that impact an American’s ability to maintain a bank account and other investment or savings accounts that they may access internationally.

Message from the Candidate:

Medicare and Social Security

Lloyd Smucker is committed to protecting and preserving Medicare and Social Security for current and future beneficiaries.

Too often, politicians go to Washington and fail to live up to their promises. Lloyd's track record in Congress proves he is keeping his promise to his constituents to ensure they get the benefits they deserve.

You should be able to make health care decisions - not the federal government - that work for you and your family. That's why Lloyd introduced legislation to provide more flexibility to seniors enrolling in Medicare.

Growing the Economy

The American economy is booming. Lloyd is working to enact policies that let small businesses grow, create more jobs, and support our local economy.

Lloyd went to Washington to kick our economy in high gear. He's kept his promise and has enacted policies that put more money in your pocket instead of sending it to Washington.

Lloyd's work in Washington and Pennsylvania has resulted in the lowest unemployment rate in decades, rising wages, an abundance of jobs, and greater opportunity for everyone.

National/Community Security

Lloyd believes our law enforcement should have the tools necessary to keep our communities safe.

Lloyd has worked to restore funding for our military and support our service men and women who put their lives on the line to keep us safe here at home.

Our immigration system is broken. Lloyd has worked in Congress to make needed reforms so that our laws are enforced, our communities are safe, and those coming to America are playing by the rules.
